Partizani and Erzeni secure Albanian national cup crowns

Tirana, Albania, March 4, 2019. The teams of Partizani and Erzeni are the winners of this year’s Albanian national cup for women and men, respectively. The final phase of the competition took place from March 1-3 in Tirana after the early stages of the tournament had started in November already. It was a truly successful event, with a number of dramatic matches to enjoy for the many fans in attendance.
Partizani won the women’s Albanian Cup after recording a 3-1 victory in the final against Mirdita, in a match that was especially close and dramatic in the first two sets. The fatigue of the day before, where they had secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Barleti Volley in the semis, did not affect Partizani at all, as they improved the quality of their performance from set to set. The additional players transferred in January to strengthen the roster made sure the team coached by Roland Tarja claimed a well-deserved victory.

Erzeni claimed the men’s title for the first time in 20 years, just as they did last year with the national league crown. In the final, the Shijaku team defeated Partizani 3-0 in a match that the eventual champions dominated from start to end. Erzeni were more solid and consistent, while Partizani could not put up much of a fight despite growing with each match this season. Erzeni’s triumph was well deserved, as they were able to lead the way in each set.

Back in November and December 2018, the elimination phase of the national cup had taken place. Upon completion of the group stage, the first two teams of each pool qualified for the semi-finals. Many fans came together for the final stage of the competition held across the weekend at Feti Borova sports hall in the Albanian capital.
