School Project helps Gibraltar make historic debut in underage international competition

In April, the Gibraltar Volleyball Association (GVA) continued its work within the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’ with a focus on the two largest schools – Bayside and Westside. This work continued in May as did a project at St Joseph’s Upper Primary school.
One of the two classes to have Volleyball under the Six-Week Programme last year has joined the CEV School Project. The children welcomed Volleyball again with much enthusiasm, working with them was much easier, and it was nice to see how the children were just improving their knowledge and skills. This class will move to high school next year, and there is hope they will join lunch-time Volleyball and be recruited by GVA.
Work in lunchtime club at the two major comprehensive schools Bayside and Westside has progressed further thanks to Mrs Alecio and Mrs Golt. Work also continued with the GCSE class of teacher Mrs Nunez, with the programme due to run for the next couple of weeks.
Last month, Gibraltar took part in the Small Countries Association (SCA) U20 Men’s Championship held in Andorra. This was the first time that Gibraltar competed in a men’s underage category, and it is evidence of the work which is being undertaken by the Gibraltar Volleyball Association, with junior development being at the forefront of the Federation’s aims. Most of the participants of the Gibraltar team were children who were or are still involved in the CEV School Project.
